A perplexed mum has taken to the internet to ask fellow parents for assistance after her seven-year-old's maths homework left her baffled.

What seemed like a straightforward problem turned into a head-scratcher, prompting Angie Werner from Australia to seek clarity on the Breastfeeding Mama Talk Facebook group, later shared by HuffPost UK.

Werner posted a photo of the tricky question, seeking help: "We're all stumped. My second grader's (Year 3, ages seven and eight) homework - help."

The math problem seemed simple enough: "There are 49 dogs signed up to compete in the dog show. There are 36 more small dogs than large dogs signed up to compete. How many small dogs are signed up to compete?"

At first glance, one might assume the answer is 13. But that wasn't the case. Werner revisited the issue with her daughter's math teacher, who revealed the actual answer: 42.5.

"The school worded it wrong," Werner explained to Popsugar. "The answer would be 42.5, though, if done at an age-appropriate grade."

The confusion came from selecting the number 36, which inadvertently led to the realm of half-dogs, complicating matters.

According to Werner, the answer can be derived as follows: 49 - 36 = 13; 13 divided by 2 = 6.5; then 36 + 6.5 = 42.5.

If you managed to figure that one out, we salute you!
