Students at a Texas College have been left in shock after being informed that an anonymous donor has paid off their remaining tuition fees.
The generous stranger reportedly paid off the tuition fees for the entire '22 year group at at Wiley College in East Texas - a college historically renowned for having predominantly black students.
During their graduation ceremony this week, more than 100 graduates were informed by college president, Herman Felton Jr, that they would no longer be required to pay any tuition fees to the college.
Announcing the incredible gesture, he said: “You are debt free. You do not owe the college a penny. If you have a balance, you had a balance – you no longer have a balance.”
In total, an estimated $300,000 for the balances owed to the college has been paid off. Speaking on the donation, Felton Jr said: “Our commitment to our students goes beyond their time while they are enrolled.
“We are constantly communicating with donors to assist students in these ways so that they can begin their after-college experience with less debt.
“We are grateful for this anonymous donor who will assist the students in paying off their balances to Wiley College and help us achieve institutional goals of graduating our students with little to no debt.”
In the current climate, this kind gesture will not be taken for granted. The cost of living crisis is seeing prices in the US rising at their fastest rate in more than 40 years, with inflation hitting its highest since 1981.
Now, '22 graduates from the Texas college will no longer after to think about repaying their tuition debt.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, senior Dominique Payton said: "If you do not have a zero balance - I think it's the week of commencement - you will not walk that stage to get your degree, and you will not get your degree until you have a zero balance.
"I thank God that my classmates are able to walk away without that burden on them. It helps us to go out into the world and we don't have this debt hanging over our heads.
"It is one less thing that they have to worry about. I'm hoping it throws them a little further, knowing that this is something you don't have to worry about and [they can] put [their] mind and attention elsewhere."
