Chester Zoo Is Hiring Someone To Look After Their Elephants
follow us on
Sound the dream job klaxon people, as Chester Zoo is on the hunt for someone to look after its lovely elephants.
Personally, I can think of few better ways to wile away my days at work than hanging out with nature’s gentle giants, but alas, I am wildly unqualified.
But if this sounds like something that you are genuinely interested in, read on…
The job is offering a salary of £21,356.63 a year for a 40 hour week spread over 10 days out of 14. This means there will probably be some weekend and bank holiday work, but you know, you’ll be spending it with a bunch of elephants - and presumably a load of people who are really excited to be spending their free time with a bunch of elephants - which can only be fun!
According to the website, the job offers some pretty awesome benefits including free admittance tickets, free park and ride access and 33 days paid holiday (inclusive of bank holidays) which increases with length of service.
The ad says: “We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Keeper to join us on the Elephant section. For the right candidate, this post offers a fantastic opportunity to work with a breeding family unit of Asian elephants.”
"Chester Zoo aims to set a benchmark for animal welfare and the successful candidate must be able to deliver an excellent level of animal husbandry, care and welfare for the assigned mammals; ensuring that all enclosures and facilities are maintained to the highest possible standards."
Referring back to me being wild unqualified for this position - you’ll need to have an HND or degree level qualification in a zoological related science or equivalent experience, to be in with a shout of bagging the role for yourself, which I’m guessing means my A-Level Biology won’t quite be enough…
You'll also have to have proven experience in the care and management of large mammal species including giraffe, rhino or elephants in a zoo or safari park setting as well as experience implementing environmental enrichment.
If you find yourself ticking plenty of those boxes you can apply for the position here, but don’t hang about too long - applications close this Sunday August 18th.
