In case you didn't know, drinking too much alcohol isn't great for your body, but over Christmas, the most indulgent season of all, it's hard not to get a little carried away.

I think it's fair to say us Brits love a bev, but sometimes it's worth having a break from the stuff - and we're about to tell you why.

It's not just heavy drinkers who will benefit from putting down the pint, it affects everybody. Even if you only drink one day a week, giving your body a rest from the alcohol really does have some great benefits.

How Body Changes Stop Drinking Alcohol

Not only will you be giving your liver a bit of a break, you'll be letting your wallet breathe too. For instance, if you had six pints or six glasses of wine over the course of a week you could be saving yourself £80 a month, more if you're a londoner...

Week one - Usually, alcohol tends to make you fall asleep quicker but overall the quality of your sleep will suffer. At first when giving up the alcohol it might take longer to get to sleep, but you'll be having a better kip than usual.

Once you've had a drink sometimes cravings kick in for junk food and you may or may not have a bigger splurge than you usually would on take-aways. Without a drink you'll obviously tend to be more rational with your food and make better choices. For me this would mean deciding NOT to get an extra mayo chicken on top of my current double cheese burger meal... I'm kidding (I'm not kidding).

Finally, during week one you'll start to feel more hydrated. You'll be shocked to know, six glasses of wine makes you lose an astonishing 19-24 glasses of water! Which explains why you're so god damn thirsty the day after a night out...

All of this is just what happens in the first week.

Week two - After sleeping better and feeling more hydrated, your skin will benefit too, looking healthier and less puffy.

If you suffer with heart burn or acid reflux you'll likely start to see those symptoms reduce as well, as alcohol is an irritant to the stomach.

Week three - by the third week you'll have lowered your blood pressure as well as having saved a boat load of calories.

According to the drink aware website drinking six pints a week adds up to 1092 calories and six glasses of wine a week is 954 if you times that by four that's a whole lotta calorific intake!

If you cut out all of that AND the extra calories from drunken food bought and hangover breakfasts, you'll be onto a slimmer you in no time.

Week four - At this point you can give yourself a huge pat on the back as you should be at your peak and feeling on top of the world!

Your skin will be glowing, your body will be lookin' all fine and lean, you'll have saved a whole lot of cash money and to top it all off your mood should also be improved.

Overall, giving yourself a break from the drink is way better for your health. So this January, why not make it dry?
