Joe Lycett Shreds £10k Of Own Money And Disowns David Beckham As Gay Icon Over Qatar World Cup Role

Comedian Joe Lycett has shredded £10,000 of his own money after former footballer David Beckham failed to end his relationship with Qatar as the 2022 World Cup kicks off.
Beckham - who Lycett has described as a 'gay icon' for his previous support of the LGBTQ+ community - is currently an ambassador for the World Cup and is reportedly being paid £10 million to promote the tournament.
However the host nation has been subject to major backlash due to its human rights record, with homosexuality being illegal in the country and punishable by a prison sentence.
Lycett called on Beckham to cut ties with the host nation, promising to donate £10,000 to charity if the former footballer stopped promoting the World Cup.
However he similarly promised that if Beckham continued to promote the tournament he would shred the £10k.
The 34-year-old comedian has previously praised Beckham for being 'the first premiership footballer to do shoots with gay magazines' and to 'speak openly about [his] gay fans', while also joking that Beckham 'married a Spice Girl, which is the gayest thing a human can do'. But following Beckham's promotion of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the comedian set up the website 'benderslikebackham.com' which served as a countdown to midday yesterday (20th November), by which point he promised to shred his £10k if Beckham hadn't stopped his promotion.
Once the deadline arrived, Lycett stood by his word and did in fact shred the money.
However, not all are impressed by the comedian's form of protest.
Some are insisting he should still donate the money to charity regardless of Beckham's decision to continue promoting the tournament.
Others are defending the comedian, however, with one person tweeting: "If you've held more issue with Joe Lycett shredding £10,000 than David Beckham being paid £10,000,000 to tell everyone how 'good' Qatar is, then you're part of the problem."
Another added: "'Omg did you hear Joe Lycett shredded 10k?' 'That’s atrocious, why did he do that?!' 'Because David Beckham has claimed to be an LGBT+ ally and then took £150m from a regime which criminalises homosexuality'. That conversation will now be had 1000s of times. That’s the point."
