Over half of university students are now choosing their accommodation based on how sustainable it is as young people become more eco-conscious.

New research, commissioned by the world’s largest student accommodation marketplace, Student.com, has revealed that students are now prioritising environmentally-friendly housing more than ever before, with over half (51%) looking for features including recycling facilities, solar panels and sustainable furniture when deciding where to live.

The poll of 1,000 university students found that sustainable facilities are a must-have for nearly a third, with 30% willing to pay more for accommodation if the housing has good environmental policies in place, while roughly a tenth say they will only live with people who share the same views on the environment.

Almost half of students (43%) also reported that they make day to day decisions with environmental concerns in mind, with more than a quarter (26%) regularly eating vegetarian and vegan meals to help save the planet, and one in six (16%) volunteering or contributing to local community initiatives on a regular basis.

As well as sustainability, the study also found that students are increasingly valuing mindfulness, with more than one in six saying they  meditate regularly (18%), 15% doing journaling and nearly half (45%) regularly cooking from scratch to help them unwind from the stresses of everyday life.

A massive 90% of students say they consider themselves to be health conscious, with 40% treating their mental health as a priority.

With students prioritising living a more physically and mentally healthy life, they are currently living in properties with on site gyms or fitness areas (29%), a pool (11%), a cinema or gaming room (18%) and a roof terrace (15%).

Speaking about the findings, Dan Baker, General Manager for Student.com said: “It’s fantastic to see that passionate students are prioritising being more environmentally conscious and are looking to make a real impact by dedicating time on the side of their studies to help the local community. Their focus on both community and wellbeing can be seen in the demand for properties that provide a wide range of facilities such as gyms and outdoor space as well as sustainable living features, as they look to balance their education with personal passion points.”

In terms of university choices, one in five (21%) students are now looking for universities that are under an hour away from home so they could visit regularly, while 24% were willing to be up to two hours away so they could still see their family easily.

However, the current students polled also had some advice for those applying to university in the future…

A third (34%) recommending thinking about student accommodation as early as possible and also ensuring you have a cleaning rota in place, while a further 38% also said that a top tip is to not be afraid to live with people you don’t know, as it can turn out really well.

Student.com is the world’s leading marketplace for student housing, helping students find their perfect student home.
