The Duke of Edinburgh has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

The Prince and Queen Elizabeth 2nd were married for 73 years. Flags on landmark buildings are to be lowered to half mast as a period of mourning is formally announced.

The Prince's health has been deteriorating for some time, with him having spent four nights at King Edward VII hospital in London before Christmas 2019 for observation and treatment in relation to a 'pre-existing condition'.

He then spent nearly a month in hospital having been admitted in mid-February this year for an infection and a pre-existing heart condition.

He stepped down from royal engagements in May of 2017, making his final public appearance later that year during a Royal Marines parade at Buckingham Palace.

Since retiring from public view, the Prince has spent the majority of his time at the family's Sandringham estate in Norfolk, although the pair spent though the majority of the lockdown periods throughout the Covid-19 pandemic together at Windsor Castle, celebrating their 73rd wedding anniversary in November 2020 as well as the Duke's 99th birthday.

Born on the island of Corfu, Prince Philip, once described himself as 'a discredited Balkan prince of no particular merit or distinction', played a key role in the development of the modern monarchy in Britain, giving up a promising career in the Navy to devote himself full time to Royal duties.

Announcing his death, Buckingham Palace said: Her Majesty announced her husband's death at midday. Buckingham Palace said in a statement: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."

RIP The Duke of Edinburgh: 1921-2021
