Prince William Broke Royal Protocol During Euro 2022 Final But It Was 'Deliberate', Says Former Royal Butler | TOTUM

Eagle-eyed viewers may have noticed that Prince William appeared to break royal protocol after the 2022 Euro's final between England and Germany...

Conventionally, official royal engagements require that members of the royal family keep it formal with a handshake when interacting with people.

However, the Duke of Cambridge could be seen hugging each of the Lionesses following their incredible victory over Germany after congratulating them and handing over their medals.

The momentous occasion marked an end to England’s 56-year wait for a trophy as the England women's team claimed the first major tournament win since 1966.

Despite this breaking the royal rules, a former royal butler is claiming the move will have been a deliberate one from Prince William.

Speaking to OK!, Grant Harrold explained: “Historically, there was a rule with royals that you could look but you couldn’t touch.

“If you met a royal, you could look at them and if they offered you a handshake, you were to accept it.

“That was a lot to do with the mystique surrounding the family but also for security reasons, too.”

“I think William and the other younger royals have realised that they can’t get away with being aloof," he went on.

“The Queen can get away with it because she’s the Queen and she’s from a different era, but the younger royals have been brought up very differently.

“Diana was a hugger and I think that this physical contact and hugging people has a lot to do with how William was raised.

“It won’t feel unnatural to William - if anything, it’d feel more uncomfortable if it was just a strict handshake. As well as this, seeing royals hug makes them relevant and modern.”

So, it seems it could partially be an attempt to change public perception of the royals as stuffy and out of touch.

Unfortunately, however, it might take more than a few hugs to distract the public from the latest scandal to rock the royals - specifically relating to the Duke himself.

Last week, Prince William began trending on Twitter when he was once more accused of having an affair.

It's not the first time these rumours have surfaced online - in 2019, it was widely reported that there had been a 'falling out' involving Kate, William, and a family friend named Rose Hanbury, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley, who was apparently the person having an affair with the Duke. Nothing has ever been confirmed, however.
