Samsung has just launched its brand new flagship Galaxy S20 range, with the main takeaways being universal 5G and a new camera capable of an astonishing 100x zoom…

Unveiling the new devices in San Francisco on Tuesday, the S20 range boasts faster screens, an overhauled camera system and a spread of sizes to compete with its rivals.

The Galaxy S20 has a 6.2in screen and a triple camera while the Galaxy S20+ has a 6.7in screen and quad camera - both of which feature an incredible hybrid optical zoom of 3x and digital zoom to 30x.

The super-sized Galaxy S20 Ultra has a 6.9in screen and quad camera system, but its two standout features are surely its 108MP main camera and a 10x hybrid optical zoom lens with a ‘periscopic arrangement’ that uses a prism to direct light sideways into the body of the phone, meaning it is capable of up to 100x digital zoom - double that of its rivals!

But the capabilities of the new camera don't end there...

In low light, Samsung's 'Night mode' pro-grade camera system captures multiple photos at once, merging them into one stunning shot with less blur and noise, and with larger image sensors and AI, switching to Night mode means you can shoot night-time scenes clear like daylight!

Next up we've got 'Single Take', which is essentially burst mode turned beast mode. With revolutionary AI, you can shoot for up to 10 seconds and get back a variety of formats - letting you choose the best style for the moment, without having to reshoot.

Chief of research for CCS Insight, Ben Wood, said Samsung had definitely ‘stepped up when it comes to camera capabilities on the new S20 line-up’ and that the company’s innovations concerning the handling of extended zoom, such as the new window-in-window viewfinder with over 30x magnification are definitely worthwhile additions.

On top of the new camera capabilities, all three new models have ‘Amoled’ screens with a refresh rate of 120Hz - that’s twice the speed of standard smartphone screens and a third faster than the 90Hz screens used by OnePlus and Google last year giving you super smooth scrolling and fast-moving interactions.

Although the S20 will be available in either 4G or 5G, the S20+ and S20 Ultra will only be available with 5G.

All three models come with at least 128GB of storage and a microSD card slot for adding more, 8, 12 or 16GB of RAM, fast cable and wireless charging, large batteries and ultrasonic in-screen fingerprint scanners for unlocking the devices.

“The support for 5G across all three variants of the S20 lineup is a key element, ensuring customers are getting a future-proof purchase and the camera certainly stands out, particularly on the flagship S20 Ultra,” said Wood.

But it doesn’t end there - as well as the S20 series, Samsung is also launching the Galaxy Z Flip - a clamshell phone with a foldable display, and an updated version of its wireless earbuds, the Galaxy Buds+, which have a similar design but increased battery life of 11 hours of playback and a charging case.

Not bad at all!
