It seems appropriate that with International Earth Day 2021 just gone, Samsung has rolled out an exciting new waste-reducing update…

The tech giant has released an innovative software update that allows users to convert their old Samsung phones into makeshift smart home devices!

The Galaxy Upcycling at Home scheme was first announced at CES 2021 in January, but now users in the UK can begin using the program in its beta stage.

However, it also coincides with Samsung’s current Supercharged event which is offering a whole range of amazing discounts on new tech - including 15% off any Samsung phone!

Running from April 26th until May 3rd, Samsung is offering amazing discounts on its latest tech with deals including 15% off any phone, laptop, tablet or wearable device, up to 20% off Samsung TVs, and up to 25% off home appliances.

So if you were on the fence about upgrading, considering the environmental impact while also wondering what to do with your old phone, now you know!

The premise behind the Upcycling at Home scheme is simply to reduce waste. It allows you to breathe new life into old Samsung phones that would otherwise be lying idle, gathering dust in a drawer somewhere, instead converting them into fully functioning IoT (internet of things) devices.

The update will allow you to transform your old phone into a multitude of devices including a childcare monitor, pet care solution or light controller by adding additional functionality that can detect movement and audio in the home using sensors built in to the phone.

It also adds an improved AI system, which will allow them to better distinguish sounds and movement - smart home features that users can  access through SmartThings Labs via the SmartThings app.

For example, after updating, your old phone’s light sensor could now be used to measure the brightness in a room, meaning you can set the phone to automatically turn the lights on when the room becomes darker than a chosen level!

So, which devices specifically are compatible with the new functionality?

Well, the Galaxy Upcycling at Home initiative is available on all Samsung Galaxy S, Note and Z models released from 2018 onwards, and equipped with Android 9 and above, however Samsung says it will be adding support for additional devices going forward.

So, if all this has got you considering upgrading your phone - and putting your old one to good use - be sure to check out the Samsung’s Supercharged event for exclusive offers starting April 26th and running to May 3rd.
