A petition for the UK government to make June 21st 2021 a one-off bank holiday haas now gained over 36,000 signatures!

This means the government are legally obliged to respond to the petition which began gaining traction after the Prime Minister, announced England’s ‘roadmap out of lockdown’ earlier this week.

Weirdly, the petition was actually created by David Metcalf last year, implying he may be some sort of soothsayer when he suggested the date as the ideal time for a special Bank Holiday way before the roadmap was revealed…

Taking to Twitter, David wrote: “With #COVID19 scuppering #Christmas and #Eid amongst others. I think we need a family day to look forward to.

"I'm calling on the govt. to make Mon June 21st, midsummer's day, in 2021 a bank holiday. A day for families of all faiths & none to get together."

But with Boris Johnson now provisionally putting forward the date for the lifting of all remaining social distancing restrictions, the petition has seen people flocked to sign it in their thousands.

The petition reads: "We'd like the government to create a one off Bank Holiday, to be known as Merriweather Day, on Monday June 21st 2021 as an opportunity for families and friends to come together.

"Covid-19 has negatively impacted people and families up and down the length of the country in many different ways not least their ability to come together.

"We've seen family celebrations at Eid, amongst others, cancelled and it looks likely Christmas will be the same.

"This proposed bank holiday would help families and friends of all faiths and none to come together to celebrate.

"We've chosen the longest day of the year as it provides for the most opportunities to be outdoors in a Covid-19 safe way.”

It’s worth remembering that the dates proposed in the roadmap the ‘earliest possible time’ these steps might be taken, dependent on the ‘four conditions’ set out by the government being met before each level of restrictions is lifted.

The four conditions are:

  • The vaccine deployment programme is continuing successfully.

  • Evidence shows vaccines are sufficiently effective in reducing hospitalisations and deaths in those vaccinated.

  • Infection rates do not risk a surge in hospitalisations which would put unsustainable pressure on the NHS.

  • The assessment of the risks is not fundamentally changed by new variants.

Fingers crossed, and go on, give us an extra bank holiday! You can sign the petition here.
