It turns out that today is actually a pretty exceptional one - especially if you’re into numbers and that…

It was noted earlier this month that February 2021 will be a ‘perfectly rectangular month’ - check out your calendar to see what all that’s about - and while that is obviously something to get a bit excited about in these strangest of times, in terms of its uniqueness it’s nothing compared to today.

January 21, 2021 is notable for no other reason than the fact it is January 21, 2021 - the 21st day of the 21st year of the 21st century.

Hey - we’ve got to take our kicks where we can get them at the moment haven’t we!?

There is a little bit of controversy however, as if you believe the millennium began on January 1st 2000 as opposed to January 1st 2001, this would actually be the 22nd year - so, boo I guess!

But more than that, it actually all comes down to whether you believe there was a year zero; if there was that would mean that 2,000 years would have passed at the end of year 1999 and a new millennium would have started on New Year’s Day 2000.

However, many historians and calendar experts agree that there is no year zero, meaning the 21st century started in 2001.

Confused yet?

If so, don’t worry about it - let’s just enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime date and look forward to when it next happens on - if I’ve understood this right - January 22nd, 2122. That took some thinking.

On the other hand, if none of this means anything to you whatsoever, then just take solace in the fact that it’s Thursday, the weekend is fast approaching and it won’t be too long until we’re into our perfectly rectangular February!
