A new scheme launched by the Co-op means you can now donate money to charities helping to feed those in need in the UK - simply by buying a 3 for 2 deal!

As well as the tragic loss of life, the coronavirus outbreak has also served to exacerbate the inequalities that still exist in society.

With many people being furloughed or losing their jobs altogether, household budgets across the UK have been hit hard, meaning those who were just about managing have suddenly found themselves struggling to put food on the table.

Since the start of the pandemic, thanks to the Co-op’s colleagues, members and customers, 5 million more meals have been donated to those in need by raising money for food charity, FareShare - but there's still more to do.

Which is why the Co-op has launched its new scheme to donate even more to those who need it.

The Co-op website states: "When you buy from our 3 for 2 picnic range we’ll donate 20p per product to National Emergencies Trust.

"Funds raised will be distributed to local grassroots projects across the UK who are helping people get access to food, for example through food redistribution and programmes that support groups to get access to nutritious and balanced meals.

"Together we can help those going hungry."

Earlier in the pandemic, Manchester United and England star Marcus Rashford - who has now been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Manchester - leant a hand to the Co-op’s campaign, appearing in an advert alongside Co-op and FareShare colleagues.

Co-op then also backed Marcus’ #MakeTheUTurn campaign to extend free school meals to children who need them over summer - which you’ve probably heard was a successful - having already decided to continue providing Co-op vouchers every week of the summer holidays to all the pupils at the 25 Co-op Academy schools who usually rely on free school meals.

On top of this, Co-op members, can still donate your 5% member reward to the Co-op Members’ Coronavirus Fund.

As well as supporting FareShare, the fund provides support to bereaved families of key workers lost to the virus, who cannot afford their funeral and to local causes tackling the impacts of the virus within our communities.

You can donate your 5% member reward by logging into your online Membership account.

To minimise food waste, Co-op has also partnered directly with local food charities and community groups to share good food that would otherwise have gone to waste.

The Food Share programme is always looking for more local causes to get involved with, so if you’re a local food charity or cause, please apply to join Food Share online.

And if you're interested in other ways to help combat food poverty, we can also all do our bit to help with the crisis by making sure that we minimise our own food waste - did you know that, on average, each UK household throws away roughly £500 worth of food a year? Madness.

You can find loads of helpful tips on how to manage your own food waste here.

And don't forget that TOTUM members get 10% off every time you shop at the Co-op!
