Freshers' WeekMistakes Freshers' Week Mistakes
Denim and Vans not LBD and heels
OK y’all, although you may feel like first impressions are everything, there are a few tips that you MUST know when it comes to Freshers’ Week fashion…
Firstly, comfort is key. You’re going to be hanging out in the best nightlife spots in your new home town – don’t let your fashion choices hold you back! Leave the Yeezys and stilettos behind and stick to a pair of comfy classics. Whatever you wear, it’ll be covered with foam and UV paint before you know it!
Now, as an 18-year-old heel lover, it was hard for me to let go. If you can’t be away from your trusty platforms when hitting the town, be sure to pack your fold up flats in your bag. Don’t panic if you’re missing this essential, TOTUM has you covered. Get half price Amazon Prime Student membership that comes with unlimited one-day delivery.
Becoming a local at the takeaway
Dancing away until the early hours can work up an appetite. One of my first Freshers’ memories was getting lost around York trying to find the legendary late-night Burger van on Parliament Street. I even made it onto their wall of fame with a picture of me gazing lovingly at my cheesy chips. Trust me - making those end of the night trips to the takeaway WILL aid your recovery the next morning. Remember, get to know the staff at your local takeaway, and you never know, they might give you extra cheese on those chips for free...
Once you’re fed, book a taxi home and remember to check if they offer a student discount off the fare. Your TOTUM card can be used as Student ID and always comes in useful, saving you money all the way to your doorstep.
Becoming a night owl
The Freshers’ calendar is one of the busiest weeks of the year and even on the nights you decide to take it easy, you’ll find yourself up to the early hours chatting with your new flat mates. Mix the late-night social life with 9am lectures and the end result will mean your body clock hates you. Make sure you catch up on sleep - you won’t be the first to take naps in between lectures! I remember crawling back to halls after my 9ams and sleeping for the rest of the day.
If beauty sleep just isn’t something you’re willing to sacrifice, or the late nights and messy foam parties just aren’t for you, then be sure to check the day time events your Students’ Union have put on. They’ll range from film clubs to FIFA tournaments, Zorb football to games of Quidditch… there’s always something for everyone.
You can use the TOTUM app to check out upcoming events at your Student’s Union and purchase any tickets you may need.
Survival of the fittest
Congratulations, you made it to the end of Freshers’. That gives you 11 months and 3 weeks to recover physically, mentally and financially!
You may have made it through the first couple of weeks at uni with no glitches, but don’t be lured into a false sense of security. There is pretty much no hiding from the infamous Freshers’ Flu outbreak that sweeps the nation. If it isn’t a hangover stopping you from making it into lectures, it may well be the germs.
Luckily for you, once again your TOTUM card will come to the rescue and provide you will 20% off at Superdrug (for a limited time only), meaning you can stock up on all the remedies, tissues and vitamins you could ever need!
Well that’s it. I hope that your Freshers’ is filled with fun nights in and out. Make the most of it, before life gets real and you need to focus on with deadlines, lectures and revision. Remember, whether you're partying, shopping or studying, you’ll go further with TOTUM.
