Fans of the Scream films rejoice, Courteney Cox has confirmed, via Instagram, that she is onboard for the fifth installment of the popular slasher movie series.

Coming nine years after Scream 4 hit the big screen and a full 24 years since the original shocked audiences, Cox will once again portray Gale Riley/Weathers the ruthless journalist who investigates a spate of Ghostface murders in the fictional town of Woodsboro, California.

Cox’s Instagram post which has been viewed over 1.5 million times simply states "I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE THIS FACE AGAIN", along with the classic Ghostface mask.

Revealed on Deadline, Scream creator Kevin Williamson said: “We can’t imagine Scream without the iconic Gale Weathers and are so incredibly thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to work with Courteney. We’re absolute mega fans of her work and we’re so excited to join her in the next chapter of the Scream saga!”

Scream 5 is to be the first movie in the franchise not to be helmed by Wes Craven, who sadly died in 2015, with directing duties passed on to duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.

The Friends star will be reunited with ex-husband David Arquette who has confirmed he will be reprising his Sheriff Dewey role in the latest installment. All we need now is Neve Campbell to return.

Grossing over $600m at the box office, the Scream franchise is one of the most popular horror film series of the last 25 years. Scream 5 is due out in 2021 and we can't wait, pass us the popcorn...
