If you’re one of the people who is feeling brave enough to head off for a bit of time in the sun, a number of hotels in Greece have begun offering cut-price rooms to try and tempt back tourists.

Following a relatively sever lockdown for the coronavirus pandemic, Greece reopened its borders on July 1st.

However with a lot of uncertainty regarding travel remaining, the country has failed to see an influx of tourists, prompting some hotels to slash their prices by as much as 40%.

According to a report in the Mirror, a week-long stay at a hotel in Rhodes next month could set you back just £11 per person per night!

Seven nights on the island of Kos could come in at only £12 per person per night and a week's stay in Crete is currently £17 per person per night.

The Greek government has been allowing British citizens to enter since last Wednesday (July 15th), however it is carrying out tests on new arrivals and has said it will re-issue the ban on British travellers if cases rise, after officials reported around 500 new cases since borders opened.

As a result the country has now vowed to step up inspections of bars and restaurants over concerns that ‘asymptomatic’ foreign travellers are spreading the infection.

According to newspaper Protothema: "If the number and percentage of those found to be positive is low, and is limited to less than 30 to 40 cases then [...] the British tourist market will remain open.”

"We all knew, both we and our scientists and experts, that with the opening of our borders we would have a partial increase in cases," said Greek Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias. But, he added, "the economy and tourism must survive."

Tourism is Greece’s biggest revenue driver, accounting for between 18-20% of the country’s (GDP) with 34 million tourists spending around €18 billion (£16.2 billion) in 2019.

There are fears that figure could fall by as much as 70% this year with approximately two-thirds of hotels fearing huge losses or even closings due to a lack of customers, coupled with the cost of implementing new health protocols.

In spite of this, the Greek government has made it clear that it 'won't hesitate' to close its borders again, saying that the risk of the virus spreading throughout the country outweighs 'any benefits to tourism in a year that is considered largely lost’.
