The BBC has confirmed that national treasure and all round great guy, Sir David Attenborough, will be the nation’s new ‘virtual geography teacher’. Fantastic!

With schools across the UK remaining closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, many families have been doing their best to bring learning into their homes.

And it sounds like some of that learning may about to become a lot more interesting as Sir David has joined what the BBC is calling its 'biggest ever education offer', Bitesize Daily.

That’s right - prepare for geography to become the nation’s favourite subject as Sir David offers up his incredible knowledge, using it to teach children all about the oceans.

As well as that, he’ll also be looking at how humans map the world and  why animals look the way they do. Let’s face it, it’s not just going to be kids tuning in is it…?

The BBC launched Bitesize Daily today, and is offering 14 weeks of curriculum based learning for kids across the UK - a huge helping hand to parents who are trying to juggle the pressures of working from home with trying to make sure their kids are still doing a bit of learning.

Sir David will also be joined by other heavyweight names such as Professor Brian Cox, who will be teaching some key science topics including the solar system, force and gravity, and Manchester City footballer Sergio Aguero, who will be doing some basic Spanish lessons!

Actor Danny Dyer will be teaching kids all about Henry VIII in Key Stage One history classes while Doctor Who's Jodie Whittaker, former MP Ed Balls, musicians Liam Payne and Mabel, TV presenter Anita Rani and Strictly Come Dancing star Oti Mabuse will all be doing their bit to impart some wisdom during the lockdown.

But for the slightly more mature among you who might be fancying a bit of online learning to keep the old mind sharp during lockdown, don’t forget that TOTUM members can treat themselves to FREE online courses at BuyAGift or 15% student discount off the rest.

With everything that’s going on it’s important that we look after our mental health, which is why BuyAGift are offering loads of online activities - for FREE!

From knitting and drawing to origami, yoga and museum tours, keep your mind active.

Director of BBC Children's & Education, Alice Webb, said: “We're proud that the BBC can bring together so many people to offer such a wide-ranging package of support to help children and parents right across the UK at such a challenging time.

“We said the BBC would be there for people through this crisis, and we meant it. It's vital that every child is able to continue learning - and the lessons we're putting on will make sure they have fun at the same time."

BBC Bitesize Daily will deliver a tailored day of learning across BBC iPlayer, Red Button, BBC Bitesize website and app, BBC Four and BBC Sounds, with curriculum relevant offers across the UK.
