Get healthy, happyhair with theseDIY masks

India BenjaminJanuary 4th

Nothing beats a good hair day, but sometimes your hair just doesn’t get the memo. Splashing out on expensive hair products isn’t always feasible, but that doesn’t mean you have to suffer. With a little help from TOTUM, you can easily create your very own hair masks using food and drink.

The Boozy Breakfast, for damaged hair

Has heat and dye left your hair worse for wear? This two-ingredient mask will help to strengthen and repair each strand, and it’s all down to one surprising component… Beer! Beer is full of hair friendly vitamins and minerals – plus malt and hops are packed with protein. Paired with an egg for extra protein and nourishing fats, this mask will leave your hair looking and feeling healthy.

You’ll need:

  • ½ a pint of beer

  • 1 raw egg

To make this mask, simply whisk together the ingredients until combined. Apply to towel dried hair and leave on for 30 minutes or longer. Rinse off with cool water (to avoid the egg cooking!) and condition as usual.

The Smoothie, for dry frizzy hair

Has winter left your hair feeling dry and rough? This smoothie-inspired mask is team TOTUM’s go to recipe for soft hair, all year round. Honey, a natural humectant, moisturises the hair from the outside, while the fatty acids in the coconut oil penetrates the shaft and moisturises from within. The zinc, magnesium and potassium in the banana helps to soften and protect so your hair is more resilient moving forward.

You’ll need:

  • ½ ripe banana, mashed

  • 1 tbsp honey

  • 1 tbsp coconut oil

Mix all the ingredients together and apply to damp hair, combing through. Cover in cling film and leave for 30 minutes before thoroughly rinsing. Shampoo and condition as normal.

The Acid Rinse, for dull limp hair

Hair products can build up over time, leaving your hair looking lifeless and dull. This rinse uses acid to strip off any residual products that can weigh your hair down. As hair is naturally acidic, it also helps to rebalance the cuticles, leaving them silky and smooth.

You’ll need:

  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar

  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

  • 1 cup of water

Shampoo your hair and rinse thoroughly. Pour the mix on, starting with your scalp through to the ends. Massage or brush through the hair and leave on for 1 minute, before thoroughly rinsing. Condition as usual. Don’t worry – the vinegar smell washes off!

The Dessert, for hair that just won’t grow

Packed full of ingredients which nourish and strengthen the hair, this mask also contains cinnamon and lactic acid which exfoliate the scalp and encourages growth.

You’ll need:

  • 4 tbsp full fat natural yoghurt

  • 2 tbsp honey

  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Whisk together the ingredients and apply to dry hair, ensuring you massage in to the scalp. Leave on for half an hour before washing as usual.
