There’s a lot to consider when choosing University. What course do I want to study? Will it help me get a job? Does the University have a good football team? What’s the food like?

You can probably get the answers to all those questions with a quick search on the internet, or by attending university open days. But if you want a more realistic view of where you’ll be spending the next few years of your life, you’ll want to check out the QS Best Student Cities 2018 league tables – an annual report which assess nearly 500 cities globally and creates a list of the top 100 for students.

The assessment is based in on six factors: university rankings, student mix (percentage of international students), desirability (area safety), employer activity (employers recruiting graduates from that city), affordability and student satisfaction – based on a survey of half a million students from December 2016 to April 2018.

Taking all these factors into consideration, these are the 10 student cities in the United Kingdom that rank among the top 100 in the world:

10 - Brighton: Famous for its pebbly beaches and high percentage of foreign students from all over the world, Brighton's easy-going vibe has landed it a top ten spot.

9 - Newcastle-upon-Tyne: Ranked the 56th best city in the world for University, Newcastle is praised for its friendly atmosphere, rich arts scene and of course a good old night on the toon.

8 - Aberdeen: Home to both Robert Gordan University and the University of Aberdeen, the city is safe, affordable and ranked the highest in the UK for desirability and affordability.

7 - Birmingham: The origin of the Peaky Blinders! The UK’s second largest city has loads to offer. From great restaurants to boat trips down the canal. Excellent transport links and a great campus put Birmingham firml;y on the list.

6 - Nottingham: Best known, of course, for the Robin Hood legend, Nottingham is an academically thriving city. Home to both Nottingham Trent University and The University of Nottingham, it’s also rated the third best city in the UK for student satisfaction.

5 - Coventry: the site for Coventry University and the University of Warwick, Coventry is famous for student diversity, with 40% of its students coming from abroad. It’s also known for its comedy gigs and significant number of pubs...

4 - Glasgow: ranked the third highest student city for desirability, the Scottish city also scores highly for student mix, satisfaction and overall university ranking. Famous for its art and music scene, Glagow has got something for everyone.

3 - Manchester: Ah Manchester, home to two of the best football clubs in the world, it is also rated as the 24th best student city globally. The diverse city has a 100,000 strong student population, is ranked 12th in the world for student mix and you'll struggle to find a place more geared towards the student experience.

2 - Edinburgh: Its diverse student population and high desirability make the Scottish capital the 16th best student city in the world. Although notoriously expensive, the city boasts beautiful architecture and a buzzing atmosphere.

1 - London: The city of dreams. Not only has the British capital been named the best student city in the UK, it also takes top spot globally. Holding 17 prestigious universities, London has the highest university rankings and is also second best for employer activity.
